Love is real. The sensation I’m feeling when I think of you, the complete and utter dedication to you, is love. I believe you are the perfect person, and as long as your behavior roughly fits my image of a perfect person, my love for you continues to exist; in my mind. Love is real, as long as I believe it is. Loving God is no different, no matter the name you give him or her. And God will never disappoint – you’ve created God in the image of what you consider perfect.

Fear is just as real. And I’m not talking about fear of tigers, snakes or – Lucifer forbid – spiders. Fear of the devil or a harsh God is real. As long as you truly believe an (almost) all powerful being is pulling the strings, you will find evidence of that everywhere you look. Who could possibly have created all of this? What is the purpose of all our suffering?

Seeing purpose in our suffering makes misery bearable. Life is hard now, but staying put, enduring the pain thrust upon us, will allow us to get into heaven; weathering the pain of the present will bring us eternal bliss by His side. Becoming a martyr for our faith gives reason to the pain this life entails. Discovering such purpose gives us direction in life. It gives our stubborn brain reason to stay the course. To justify this course, we tend to look for confirmation of what we believe in. All random occurrences are seamlessly incorporated into our image of the world – and they get added to the list of reasons why God is real. For this to fit – there needs to be purpose behind every non-orchestrated occurrence.

The Koran, so I’ve been told by devote Muslims, says that when the Euphrat dries, the world will come to an end. Climate change or political action is doing just that. Also the Bible considers this river to be the sprung in paradise – and there are more religions who consider the Tigris and Ephrat to be sacred. At the time these religions were created, the catchment areas of these rivers were the center of the world. It would, of course, be perfectly reasonable to consider that, if the source of water for the center of known civilization dries up, the world would come to an end. However, these rivers are no longer the center of civilization. Therefore, I consider the rivers drying up to be a change in the world’s ecology and not necessarily a sign that all life on earth is under threat. Sidenote: all life on earth may very well be under threat due to climate change, and climate action is urgent – but rivers come and go, it’s not due to the drying of an individual river that we should gear up.

The above is but one example of circumstance being incorporated into purpose. Said purpose is also often put to the test in love relationships; how often hasn’t it felt like you two were meant to meet? The comparison between love and religion isn’t mine; and perhaps not even Ilja Pfeijffer’s. This great Dutch author posed the link convincingly in his romance Peachez. As long as you believe, love is real; and so is God. This does not mean there is purpose behind all action, however much we would love to think so.

I realized early this century (and Karl Popper in 1945) that humans apparently have the need for seeing purpose behind random occurrences. I think this is, because a reason for all our suffering makes life bearable. Purposeful suffering requires an entity that causes this suffering. The entity humanity has been relying upon to fill this purpose has been God – for eons. God, in many forms: from Zeus through Zarathustra to Allah and back through the alphabet. But now, especially in Western Europe, people are turning their backs on religion – because God is, obviously, not all powerful.

And to me – that’s it. The world is chaos. Everybody is pulling their weight to minimize their own suffering – even though, usually, shit hits the fan real hard; there is no entity trying to inflict pain, for their gain. There is no grand purpose; no grand plan, and definitely no eternal bliss after death.

However, this seems really hard for many people to accept. For brevity, I steer clear of what I consider the genetics and evolution behind this desire for purpose; me being a widower has to have purpose, right? There has to be a better world somewhere, a reward for living with all this pain? There has to be an entity that benefits from my suffering – and that will continue to inflict pain upon me in order to remain untouchable?

Having secularized, ever fewer people consider the answer to these questions to be God (or Lucifer). Many people do, however, are sensitive to an answer to these questions. And thankfully there are always those who are ready to provide the answer. And the latest, most encompassing answer is Lizards. Shape-shifting lizards rule us in secret, and inflict suffering upon us – especially the non-believers get hit hard, not for being heretics, but for being naive; and said naivety helps the lizards gain power.

Welcome to the world – the latest and at this time still somewhat disorganized religion: Conspiratism; the consequence of secularization is the rise of conspiracy theories (see also the aforementioned work of Karl Popper). Not because its true, but because humans need random occurrences to be put into a purposeful narrative. Something happens – like the Euphrat drying out – and we make up a story that this is the sign of the world ending. Something happens – like mandatory face masks – and we make up a story that this is because the lizards are exerting their tyranny.

God is real. No matter where you look, what happens, can always be written into the purposeful narrative. Your suffering is for a greater good – sometimes someone else’s good, depending on your religion. But as long as you believe hard enough: God is real.

Gender X in my passport, please

You should refer to me as he; my body was at birth built as a stereotypical male, complete with penis and balls. Later in life I did not develop breasts. I do have a bald head, a beard and chest hair – and all those other nasty things men have. I am both emotionally and erotically attracted to women, most successfully to those who are attracted to stereotypical men. Still, I want an X in my passport in the gender-section. What is the fuss all about?

When talking about gender, I find the genderbread model a very useful tool. The four aspects of gender are presented as slides on a scale; none of them are binary, and in all of us those slides are, for different aspects, set slightly differently in each of us. When I see, hear and meet people that have their slides all jumbled somewhere in the middle (or, for example, one to the female end, and one to the male end), I become ever more grateful that my slides are all almost at the same end. I do not envy those that have to struggle with a non-stereotypical mix; that struggle is hard, real hard. It is not easy to find out who you really are when you fit in the stereotypical gender box – it is exponentially harder if you don’t. Especially in a world still tailored for stereotypicality.

That struggle, though not enviable, is not what I want to talk about here. What I wonder more and more often, is the relevance of gender, anno 2022. When I go to hospital, it’s relevant whether I have the body of a man, or the body of a woman – or whether I’ve had my physical gender changed – for we have different physical ailments and subsequent treatments. When having sex, it’s relevant whether I have the body of a man, or a woman – or whether I’ve had my physical gender changed – for it matters what hole gets plugged, and who gets pregnant. That still does. But I can not for the life of me think of any other place or moment in the world where it is relevant. I am human, that’s all that counts.

When crossing a border, it is relevant that I am human, and not an endangered species – not yet, at least. Anno 2022, we all should be equal, right? Laws apply equally to both men and women, and any other gender? When I enroll at school, gender should not be relevant. Boys and girls have to pass the same standardized tests to get a diploma. Students at university all have to perform at the same level, regardless of their gender. When I apply for a job, in general it should not matter whether I am a man or a woman (I understand that a male waiter at Hooters would be strange, but for most jobs it shouldn’t matter).

I am human. My gender is irrelevant in any official business.

I do not struggle with my gender – not with my identity, attraction, expression or sex. I do not envy those who do struggle with this; I am very grateful it is not my struggle. I wouldn‘t know where to go. Life is hard enough as it is. I do, however, want an X in my passport. I would like my employer to – by default – register new students as gender 3 (it isn’t important). I expect this, not as some misplaced victory by the woke or lgbtqia+ movement. I want this, because when it comes to official business, gender is irrelevant.

In a small village in The Netherlands – you may not know it, but Google maps does: Ophemert – the streetlights have been infected with covid19 since May 2020: they’ve had such a high fever that usually they are lit day and night. The villagers have reported this to the local council, and they receive an e-mail within two weeks saying ‘your report has been resolved’; but the streetlights are still lit (it’s October 2020 now). Expect that the electricity bill will be added to next year’s council tax invoice. In the current privatised ‘public’ sector, there is nobody politically responsible for this, and from a business perspective, Ophemert is too small, and therefore too expensive to really take care of. A company serves but one master: money. And money never serves the public cause, just the private cause.

For a large portion of the twentieth century, social democracy ruled The Netherlands (and quite a few other Western nations). This led to monstrous state owned companies, where inefficiency was rule rather than exception. They employed expensive yet incompetent people who were glued to their position so tightly that no cruise missile could dislodge them. The answer to this was implemented in the 1980s under leadership of Thatcher, Reagan, following the teachings of economists such as (among others) Buchanan: neoliberalism. The ideal became privatisation of everything the state used to organise. This was supposed to bring, on the one hand, a smaller government and thus lower taxes. On the other hand these formerly state owned companies would have to become more efficient in a free market, which would give the consumers a lower price for a better service.

We all know the result of this: hospitals can now go bankrupt; instead of one Transporter with packages, four of them race down every street, every day; and the Rijkspostspaarbank has turned into a morally unacceptable corporation where corruption, environmental pollution and weapons deals have become the way to make money. People have even talked of privatising the school system, making private companies responsible for the education of our children. This would be awesome for the rich kids, for they would be able to go to schools that can afford teachers on a real salary. For the poor children, it would mean going to the CocaCola-school in Overvecht or the Schilderswijk, where teachers would get nothing more than a contribution for voluntary labour. And a tax reduction has only been implemented for the very rich.

In the neoliberalist model, it turns out that profit is private, but losses are public responsibility. When banks make a profit, the shareholders and the board of directors share those profits; when they suffer losses due to continues mismanagement and poor judgements on risk assessment relating to investments, the population of a country has to cough up the money to prevent the bank from going bankrupt. When the corona-crisis has destroyed the tourism industry, a booking-agency that has sent billions in profits into private coffers, now is asking the public – the government – for aide to pay the salaries of their employees. Of course I do not begrudge the people who work there their jobs. But if their salaries are being paid through tax money, I expect that the billions that were skimmed off the profits of hotels in the previous years are handed over to the government. Of course it’s a very complex puzzle – who deserves help, and who doesn’t? Companies that made no profit before the corona-crisis… Do they deserve help? Don’t they? What is, and what isn’t fair? To make that call, we need a large government, with many capable officials who do not apply a one size fits all remedy, but decide on individual basis what is reasonable and fair, and what should be done in return for the help.

When will there be a politician who has the guts to start changing this neoliberalist system? Piketty has shown that everything is a choice; there are several very smart economists who offer alternatives. My question that will determine my vote in next year’s general election in The Netherlands is this: who has the guts to stand for an alternative to neoliberalism? Who has the guts to really change our household books? Roughly forty years seems to be the life span of an economic model; it’s time for a change, and in 2060 we’ll look for something new again.

Do I have the answer? Not in the least. I’m not an economist. But here in Ophemert, I see that neoliberalism isn’t working any more. This obsolete system has had its chance (and has done good too), but it has proven that it doesn’t serve the public cause. A service engineer has to be employed all day; there can not be a day during which he has no malfunctions to fix. Liander (the company running our streetlights) has promised in early June that there would be a service vehicle available to fix our streetlights ‘within two weeks’. What this service vehicle has achieved is unclear; the lights are still on. Day and night. Because Liander doesn’t serve us; Liander serves the profits under the bottom line, 246 million profit in 2018. And the extra costs for electricity will be demanded from the local council by 2021. The profits of Liander is private, but losses are to be paid for by the people. And nobody is responsible for that.

12 december – alweer een staking

Geachte ministers Slob en Van Engelshoven, geachte Minister President Rutte,

Waar moet ik 12 december a.s. met mijn kind naar toe? Kan ik die afgeven bij het Ministerie van Onderwijs, zodat zij een dagje op hem passen? Het is immers jullie verantwoordelijkheid de leraren zodanig te betalen dat ze blijven werken. Ik betaal immers belasting – ik betaal jullie salaris – zodat jullie kunnen regelen dat mijn kind naar school kan… Jullie verzaken jullie taken hierin, waardoor jullie mij met een probleem opzadelen – een probleem waar ik jullie voor betaal om het op te lossen.

Zelf ben ik docent op het mbo, en vind dat ik – voor het werk dat ik verzet – prima betaald wordt, ook al zit ik nog onderaan de schalen. Toch steun ik de staking van de onderwijzers in het primair onderwijs van harte. Niet omdat ik denk dat ze meer betaald moeten krijgen voor de hoeveelheid werk die ze verzetten, maar omdat ik van mening ben dat Nederland – dat prat gaat op haar kenniseconomie – mee moet met de landen om zich heen. Wij moeten – als het even kan – harder groeien in ons onderwijs dan de rest van Europa. De kwaliteit moet omhoog.

Het verstandigste doel, vooralsnog, lijkt me om een lichtend voorbeeld te volgen. Het lijkt me onverstandig om als land opnieuw het wiel uit te vinden, ook al kan onze trots daar slecht tegen. Het Finse onderwijssysteem levert volwassenen af die beter geschikt zijn om te functioneren in de maatschappij (en dus op de arbeidsmarkt) dan vrijwel ieder ander onderwijssysteem in de wereld. Kortom, het lijkt mij dat we naar een Fins systeem toe moeten – en laten we dan gauw beginnen met het onderwijs voor het onderwijzend personeel.

In Finland heeft elke docent, vanaf de kleuterschool, minimaal een universitair Master’s diploma. Ze moeten dit zo goed hebben gedaan, dat ze toegang hebben tot een doctoraalprogramma. Daar moeten we naar toe; daar moeten we voor werken. Maar de eerste stap is daar geld voor vrijmaken. Als je in Nederland een universitair Master hebt, ben je wel gek om voor de kleuterklas te gaan staan. Niemand die je vertrouwt (je eigen werkgever niet eens, die wil dat je alles vast legt en registreert zodat je tot over je oren in de administratie zit), maar erger nog, niemand die je fatsoenlijk betaalt! Met een universitair Master, als je dan per se het onderwijs in wil, kun je eigenlijk alleen terecht op de middelbare scholen.

Laten we nou eens beginnen om geld vrij te maken, zodat de docenten in het primair onderwijs minder hoeven te werken; zodat zij op korte termijn tijd vrij hebben om zich bij te laten scholen. Zodat we een jaar of tien de tijd hebben om de opleidingen tot docent in kwaliteit op te schroeven, zodat een kleuterjuf een universitair Master heeft. Laten we zorgen dat tegen die tijd – op de langere termijn dus – er geld beschikbaar is zodat een baan als kleuterjuf financieel ook interessant is voor iemand die een universitair Master heeft.

Kortom: laten we onze kenniseconomie veilig stellen. Laten we ervoor zorgen dat de kennis die in ons land is, een voortrekkersrol houdt in de wereld – ook in de toekomst. Laten we daar vandaag mee beginnen, en de eerste stap is geld beschikbaar maken. Geld, voor opleidingen voor onze opleiders, en geld voor tijd om die opleidingen te volgen.

Doet u dat alstublieft. Dan hoef ik geen belasting te betalen terwijl mijn kind niet naar school kan. Dan hoef ik geen dag vrij te vragen omdat er verder niemand op mijn kind wil passen, want ik neem aan dat ik hem niet, dinsdag 12 december a.s., bij het Ministerie van Onderwijs kan laten.

5 oktober 2017 – landelijke staking

Op 5 oktober 2017 staken de lagereschooldocenten in Nederland. De school waar mijn kinderen naar toe gaan heeft aangeboden met de lokale buitenschoolse opvang te communiceren zodat wij tegen betaling de kinderen daar kunnen stallen. Doe het niet. Ik zal uitleggen waarom.

Ik steun deze staking van ganser harte. Niet omdat ik per se vind dat docenten meer moeten verdienen. Nee, ik vind het van bijzonder groot belang dat wij als land fors investeren in onze scholing, en in die van de volgende generaties. Scholing, vanaf de eerste groep. Ons onderwijs ontwikkelt zich namelijk langzamer dan de andere landen nabij de top. Voor je het weet lopen we achter de feiten aan.

Finland – ja, altijd weer Finland – scoort zo goed, uiteindelijk, omdat er geld beschikbaar is. Geld om mensen met twee master-diploma’s voor de kleuterklas te zetten. In Finland zwermen grote bedrijven om de scholen heen in de hoop dat ze een docent weg kunnen peuteren, omdat die zulke speciale vaardigheden hebben. Bij ons probeert het rijk docenten uit bedrijven te peuteren omdat er te weinig docenten zijn. Wij moeten naar het Finse systeem toe; dat moet het doel zijn. Van kleutermeester tot docente voor VWO-6, iedereen zou uiteindelijk twee master-diploma’s moeten hebben. En daar moet eerst geld voor komen, dan pas kan het doel bereikt worden. Eerst de baan aantrekkelijk maken voor mensen die na het VWO nog 6 jaar gestudeerd hebben, dan pas eisen dat die er ook komen.

Ik steun deze staking van ganser harte, en roep op om massaal deel te nemen. Iedereen met kinderen op een basisschool zal die kinderen 5 oktober ergens onder moeten brengen. Betaal niet extra voor de buitenschoolse opvang; dat is alleen maar goed voor de economie, en dat zet geen extra druk op het rijk. Nee, in plaats daar van neem vrij. Vertel het management dat je niet kunt komen omdat er gestaakt wordt; dat je niet kunt komen omdat het onderwijs beter moet. Of neem de kinderen zonder waarschuwing mee naar je werk, en leg uit waarom ze die dag aanwezig zullen zijn: er wordt gestaakt, het onderwijs moet beter, en er is verder nergens waar de kinderen kunnen blijven. Vooral mensen met banen bij het rijk zouden dit moeten doen – zo zal er landelijk gevoeld worden dat niet alleen de docenten vechten voor een beter salaris, maar dat wij bereid zijn te vechten voor beter onderwijs.

Trump and Thaksin

In the West everything seems to happen a decade later than in Asia. Why don’t we learn from Asia’s mistakes?

Is it me, or does Trump’s ascension to the throne show scary similarities with Thaksin’s rise to power, way back when? I spot three C’s:

– Cronyism: Thaksin gave his relatives posts at ministries and in the police force. Trump gives his son in law an important advisory role.

– Conflict of interest: Thaksin gave his company to his driver. Trump gives his to his sons.

– Corruption: Thaksin allegedly came to power through massive vote buying, and… Well, let me not make a full list of Thaksin’s corruption charges; it would be too long. Trump has quite a list too. Think about the problems at Trump University, and about the fact that the Trump Foundation broke federal tax law.

The similarities don’t end there, and I fear that more similarities will show as time goes by… So a decade after Thailand learnt the hard way that a corrupt megalomaniac businessman isn’t the ideal leader of the country, the USA votes one in power. Interesting how that happens.

Which reminds me of two decades ago. In 1997, Asia suffered a massive credit crisis. The Japanese economy was rock bottom, and all of Asia followed. Also Thailand had a huge credit crisis, and some unfinished buildings from that time still stand. A decade later, in 2008, the West suffered the same fate. There are not that many unfinished megastructures here, but we had a credit crisis nonetheless.

The West seems to follow Asia by a decade. Isn’t that an unfamiliar idea? We no longer lead the world. Asia does (China does). Thailand now has a fairly benevolent military dictatorship (criticism possible). China has a planned economy – still. Japan I know little about, but seems to be doing well. South Korea has an impeached president (or prime minister?)… Which of these will America have adopted in a decade?

Poor Thailand, I pray for you

This is not going to be a scientifically correct post. I’m going to make claims from memory – I lived there till 2012, through almost the entire Thaksin regime, and some of the aftermath of that. I’ve been on google for an hour now, but I can’t find much in English – and I can’t write Thai to save my life (I can read it a bit). I hope those with good memory and the ability to take a step back from their own prejudices, can appreciate the conclusion I’ve come to. But I fear that the general mentality ‘if you’re not with me, you must be against me, and so supporting my opponent’ has spread beyond the lower educated gullible folk. This makes discussion difficult.

The troubles started when a large portion of the Thai people were fed up with Thaksin Shinawatra’s shameless pocket filling practices. A few examples:

1) A day or two after the law passed that trading on the stock market was tax free, he sold Thailand’s largest telecom company to a Singaporean company. Making this law was obviously more in his own interest than in that of the country. Also, he originally set up this company with a loan from the government – but that’s just a wry detail.

2) His government built – poorly constructed – housing estates for the poorest in the country. Great initiative, however, you could only get one if you had a (low paying) job. Because you’d have to borrow money from a special low interest system. The houses were built with public money, the lending system was privately owned by one of Thaksin’s cronies. Thus using public money to make not himself, but his cronies, richer.

3) A public auction of land wasn’t so public at all, as the wife of Thaksin wanted to buy it at about a third of the going land price.

4) A war on Drugs was launched in which some 1200 people died. Some of them were actual drug traffickers, none of them were drug lords. Some of them were political opponents of Thaksin, who got drugs planted on them.

And there is much more to go on and on about. But my point is made.

Unfortunately for Thailand, Thaksin was ousted in a military coup; this was a very bad idea from the start, because there is no way to legitimise this. It only made the blood of his supporters boil even more.

Then came a long time of struggle between the Thaksin supporters – the Reds hereafter – and the supporters of the elite, the Royal family if you wish – the Yellows hereafter.

This struggle is now presented as being a struggle between the democratic Reds, and the fascist Yellows.

The Yellows are no saints either. They support a King who’s protected by a overdone strict lesse majete law that puts mentally retarded people in jail for (accidentally) stepping on his picture. While this is indeed an insult in Thai culture, the King has the power to pardon such a person; yet he hasn’t. There is more to be said against this king, which I let you google by yourself – try to find out how he came to power, for example, or ask the Reds on twitter – as I hope to return to Thailand some day without getting arrested for violating this same law.

After the coup that ousted Thaksin, and after the 13 or so months of military regime (during which the top brass spent lots of money on new toys for the boys, proving also they are self serving crooks) the Reds were voted back into power. However, they were led by an incompetent bunch that tried to show the ability to act of their de-facto leader, but missed the point by 100 miles. A short term Yellow protest was put down with a hard hand by armed police; this crackdown was largely unprovoked, and with it the Yellows managed to get a lot of sympathy from the general population; they hadn’t deserved it.
After this crackdown, one of the coalition partners of the Reds’ government decided it was time to switch sides. Switching sides and swapping parties is common in Thailand. This switch put it into a coalition with the Yellows, which were suddenly able to form a government. The Reds cried coup, but fair is fair, they were put to the sideline by their coalition partner who wouldn’t support the violent crackdown. They were kicked out because of their own lack of restraint.

For the short time that the Yellows formed the government, corruption didn’t seize or got any less. The prime minister at the time was a good man, who wishes well for all Thai people, but lacks both the backbone and the charisma to pull it off. He was led – and misled – by his self serving deputy prime minister who filled his and his friend’s pockets with dream jobs and imaginary positions within the government. Just like Thaksin, he cared for little but himself and his own. Which of course angered the Reds.

So the Reds took to the streets. Demanding the Yellows give them back their government. The Yellows weren’t particularly eager to do so – of course, the Reds weren’t either. Having in fresh memory the sympathy the Yellows gained after a violent crackdown, the aim of the Reds leadership was from the get go to stay until bullets started flying. This became more and more evident the longer the protest lasted. Close to the end, pretty much all demands were given into; the Yellow’s government had all but folded, with the message: “Alright, when you start packing up your camp, we will do everything you’ve been asking till now.”
The response of the Reds was what resulted in a still on going terrorist charge. On the protest site’s stage, things were said along the line of ‘if they come with tanks to kick us out, we will burn every square inch of Thailand’. While it should cause grave concern among Thais to say this about their own country, that wasn’t considered the issue at the time.

That cracked the patience of a very patient man (I must admit, Yingluck has been very patient this time around too; unlike her brother, who wasn’t particularly patient). He allowed the army to do what the army was waiting to do for a long time. Had the army been trained properly, very few people would have died. The Thai army managed to kill 90.

Now the Reds had their right for sympathy – though they had to work really hard to get it: they’d had to drum up ever more demands and ignore all they were offered. And all I’m thinking, Tak Bai incident. Google it, and you’ll understand why the Thaksin regime, for which the Reds are fighting so hard, was evil.

Then the Reds got their elections, and became the government once again. All was fine, people were sick of protesting, and went back to their ordinary lives. Until the Reds government went a step too far, and tried to sneak a law through that would absolve the brother of the new Prime Minister (the brother being Thaksin, does nobody smell cronyism?) of all of his corruption crimes. This is what brought the Yellows to the streets this last time.

And where are we now? Another coup. Another senseless act to try and preserve the apparent peace, but which is causing only more underground turmoil. Once the money grabbing soldiers are gone, the whole thing will start again from the beginning.

And the fight goes on. Jatuporn leading the Reds (he, who encouraged the Reds to burn every inch of Thailand), Suthep leading the Yellows (who’s call for ‘one final battle’ has been heard more often than the final frontier in Star Trek; if you still believe him you’re naive at the very least). Both Jatuporn and Suthep do not understand the word compromise. Neither understands the true meaning of caring, or the true meaning of responsibility. If Thailand falls into a civil war, it’s the crazy inflaming speeches these guys can give. And both for an equally rotten agenda: get the leadership rich quick.

Where is the future in this?

Both Reds and Yellows are croaking ‘democracy’, by which the leadership means ‘buy the votes so we can fill our pockets’.
The Reds would be led by the Shinawatra clan, who would fill their own pockets and pretend to be nice to the poor (anyone remember the 1 million baht 1 tambon scheme? This was a loan, not a gift. How many cars bought with that money are still in the villages?).
The Yellows would be led by what’s left of the Royal family and the ever hungry old elite. They’ve proven 19 times now to condone of military coups, and to collaborate with vile military leaders.

There’s only one future I see for Thailand that’s bright. There’s only one way out of this mess that doesn’t involve another 5 decades of dancing this Red versus Yellow street dance. And that contains the following points.

– True free and fair elections; every vote counts, do away with constituencies. This makes it harder to buy votes
– A new – neither Red nor Yellow affiliated – charismatic leader that has an agenda which doesn’t involve filling rich folks’ pockets.
– For the people who are indoctrinated by either Jatuporn or Suthep to realise they’re both chasing a pipe dream, that both are painting castles in the sky for their own benefit, and let those two squabble in prison.

I pray for Thailand. I pray for the people of Thailand. And I pray for them to get the courage to look beyond the colours and see what the people in the other camp really want: uncorrupted free and fair elections. And a government that cares for the people, not some idols in either Hua Hin or Dubai. Only when that courage is gained, there’s a chance that the crappy leadership of both sides gets tossed by the people and Thailand once again gets a future.

Having the military toss the leadership is not the answer. It can never be.

Verkiezingen in Neerijnen – wat nu?

Ik heb aan alle partijen 2 vragen die ik graag beantwoord zou zien. Ten eerste: leg nou eens in gewone mensentaal uit wat er fout ging, de afgelopen vier jaar. En ga daarbij niet met modder gooien of dergelijke onzin, ga niet met vingertjes wijzen als het niet absoluut nodig is, kom met aantoonbare feiten.
En ten tweede: hoe denken jullie te voorkomen dat het de komende periode niet weer fout gaat?

Vandaag kreeg ik mijn stempas in de bus. Ik vermoed vele van mijn gemeentegenoten ook. Ik heb 10 jaar niet in de gemeente gewoond, dus heb echt geen flauw idee wat er speelt – ik heb ook geen klachten in mijn leven, althans niets waar de gemeente echt iets aan kan doen. Wellicht kan ik me daar erg gelukkig mee prijzen. Daar bovenop heb ik ook totaal geen idee wat ik zou doen met de macht in de gemeente Neerijnen. Dus hoe bepaal ik op wie ik ga stemmen?

Ik scheur door de verkiezingscampagnes heen en lees zo rap mogelijk alle verkiezingsprogramma’s. Ik bedoel, de stempas ligt hier voor me – de partijen zullen nu toch wel klaar zijn met dit programma?

Daar gaan we dan:

Lijst 1: Gemeentebelangen Neerijnen.

Google helpt je bij alles, en ook hierbij; ze hebben een website. Webdesign is moeilijk en ik zal een lokale partij niet al te hard afrekenen op links die een halve centimeter verspringen dankzij een a.hover detail. Er staat niet echt een verkiezingsprogramma online, maar wel een uitgebreid verhaal ‘Waar wij voor staan‘.
Dit is maar een blog en ik ga het niet al te diep analyseren. Er is vast veel over te zeggen, maar wat mij vooral opvalt aan dit document is dat GB Neerijnen bar weinig vóór staat, en wel heel erg veel tegen. Het enige wat me aansprak was dat ze (naar eigen zeggen) als enige partij een duidelijk kader hadden gesteld mbt de containerterminal in Haaften. Er ontbreekt echter uitleg over dit kader (en geen zoekhulp om dit te vinden). De mens is lui, ik heb geen antwoord gekregen op mijn twee prangende vragen. Volgende partij.

Lijst 2: CDA

Wederom is google king, en bovenaan komt een pracht van een website te staan – maar daar staat niks op. Terug naar Google – dit is dus eigenlijk al te veel moeite voor de gewone mens – en dan is er toch een verkiezingsprogramma te downloaden. Gênant detail: het pdfje heeft geen CDA in de naam (vindt het nou maar eens in je overvolle ‘Downloads’ folder!), en na de titelpagina is er geen inhoudelijk overzicht. Maar alas – het zijn lokale verkiezingen, we kijken eroverheen.
Het eerste wat opvalt is dat het CDA in Neerijnen de scheiding van Kerk en staat serieus neemt, want het duurt pas tot de vijfde regel tekst voor de Christelijke grondslag genoemd wordt. Verder krijgt het CDA in Neerijnen van mij veel punten voor de kwaliteit van hun verkiezingsprogramma. Er staan veel redelijke en menselijk aanvaardbare punten in. Bijvoorbeeld de open deur ‘de gemeente is er voor bewoners’, maar ook het keurige ‘iedereen informeren’ (dus ook mensen die niet weten hoe je een pdf vindt). Verder wil het CDA in Neerijnen wel geld in het laatje houden, maar dat niet over de rug van de burgers doen – tenminste, alleen als het niet anders kan. Tot slot wil het CDA in Neerijnen kijken of de gemeente kan fuseren. Ze zijn dus voor, onder voorbehoud dat we een plattelandsgemeente blijven. Dus niet met Geldermalsen of met Tiel samen denk ik dan… Mooi programma, mooie idealen, maar wellicht is de lijn waar ze op moeten dansen iets te strak gespannen. (ik ben trouwens tegen fuseren, maar daarover meer bij een andere partij)
Het CDA is (ondanks de niet bestaande eigen website) een ervaren partij die mooi weet te praten wanneer het nodig is.

Lijst 3: VVD

De VVD heeft gekozen mee te doen met de regionale website. Dit is goedkoper en zorgt makkelijker voor een strak uitziend geheel. Dit lukt dan ook goed, en het verkiezingsprogramma staat netjes bovenaan. Makkelijk te vinden. Het is ook een prima pdfje (gênant detail: het woordje ‘definitief’ in de naam van de pdf laat sporen zien van een lang en pijnlijk proces met opzetten en versies en onenigheid binnen de partij), met 16 bladzijden dus het volume is te overzien.
De VVD heeft het in de inleiding – niet verrassend – vooral over geld. Net als lijst 2 willen ze geld in het laatje houden, maar niet net als lijst 2 hebben ze het over mogelijk belasting verlagen ‘zodra het kan’. Gelukkig is er altijd wel een goede reden te vinden waarom het niet kan, dunkt me. Mijn verwachtingen zijn niet al te hoog gespannen – zeker niet na alle dreiging met extra taken voor de gemeente. En ook hier uit de VVD dat ze aansturen op een herindeling – dus fusie met een andere gemeente.
Verder staan ook in het programma van de VVD veel redelijke punten. Bijvoorbeeld over veiligheid – meer politie, meer preventie. Blijkbaar beseft men niet dat hiermee wel veiligheid wordt gerealiseerd, maar het gevoel van onveiligheid niet weggenomen wordt bij de burgers. Daarvoor zijn juist dingen nodig als vertrouwen in het inkomen, stabiele instituten waar je altijd op kunt rekenen.
Uitermate positief vind ik de houding dat projectontwikkelaars die niets met de getekende contracten doen uit hun contract gezet moeten worden – om kansen te creëren voor de concurrent. Lui volk en gierig volk moet je hard straffen. Ik vind dat een gewaagd standpunt van de partij van het geld.
Al met al is ook de VVD duidelijk een ervaren partij.

Lijst 4: SGP

Ook de SGP heeft een mooie site, gebaseerd op het nationale sjabloon. Wel is deze site gelokaliseerd met mooie foto’s uit de gemeente. Ook is het verkiezingsprogramma zonder veel moeite te vinden. Gênant detail: het pdf bestand heeft ‘Verkiezingsprogramma SGP Neerijnen 2014 (2).pdf’. Ik ben wel nieuwsgierig wat er met (1) is gebeurd…
Met 29 bladzijden is het wel een flink bestand om door te worstelen. In tegenstelling tot lijst 2 legt de SGP meteen in de eerste regel al de hand op de Bijbel; hiermee verbindt deze dus kerk en staat onverbiddelijk.
De speerpunten in de inleiding zijn – vanuit hun visie – allemaal goed te verdedigen. Er kan zeker discussie zijn over of je het met hen eens bent, maar als je zelf vindt dat homo’s niet het recht hebben net zo de lijden als andere getrouwden dan mag je als ambtenaar dat best weigeren te doen – er kan in een vrij land als Nederland altijd wel een ander gevonden worden die het wel wil doen. Ik vind dat wel een verdedigbaar standpunt. Wat wel meer uitleg behoeft is: bevorderen van beschaving. Leg alsjebuhlieft uit wat daarmee wordt bedoelt. Mag ik thuis dan geen boer meer laten tijdens het eten? Of mag ik geen zwerfafval meer veroorzaken? Of allebei? Ik vind dat laatste trouwens belangrijk hoor – wij burgers moeten elkaar daar meer op aanspreken. Maar dat is toch geen taak voor de gemeente?
Het programma zit – nogmaals vanuit hun visie – degelijk in elkaar. Het staat voor niet te hard werken, gematigde hoeveelheid geld verdienen, net zoveel uitgeven, en dat vooral niet op zondag. Wel blijft het woord ‘sportverdwazing’ bij mij hangen. Wat is dat dan?

Lijst 5: PvdA

Als je op Google zoekt op ‘PvdA Neerijnen‘ dan vind je op de eerste pagina alleen maar de Bestuurlijke organisatie van de raadsinformatie Neerijnen op de eerste resultatenpagina. Verder zoek je niet, toch? De rest is allemaal uit de lokale sufferdjes – geen partijprogramma te vinden dus. Erger nog, het eerste resultaat op de tweede pagina heeft de prachtige url: pvdanederbetuwe.nl.
Kortom: Fail. Ik weet niet wat de PvdA wil in Neerijnen. Jammer dan, try again in four years.

Lijst 6: Lijst Beukers

Nou dit is een lijst waarvan ik veel verwacht als het gaat om uitleg over wat er mis ging de afgelopen vier jaar. Zonder alles wat mis ging, zou deze partij überhaupt niet bestaan.
De site van de lijst is mooi opgezet, en duidelijk betrokken bij de lokale belangen. Elk dorp is vertegenwoordigd met een aantal eigen belangrijke speerpunten. Bijvoorbeeld dat de afsluiting van de Korte Straat in Tuil moet worden opengehouden, dat het mobiele netwerk in Heesselt verbeterd moet worden, en dat de buurtbus vaker in Ophemert moet rijden. Er zijn er nog veel meer en dit zal de kiezer zeker aanspreken. Deze lijst weet van elk dorp wat te vertellen!
Het verkiezingsprogramma is makkelijk te vinden, en in duidelijke taal geschreven. De speerpunten uit dit programma geven een sterk beeld van een groene, boervriendelijke, efficiënte partij die zuinig met geld omgaat. Er wordt niet gerept over belastingverlaging: sterker nog, de inflatie moet gevolgd worden, dus de bedragen gaan omhoog – want alles wordt altijd duurder.
Waar ik wel nog mee blijf zitten is: hoe neemt een samenleving verantwoordelijkheid? Als ik een bom laat ontploffen, dan kan ik de verantwoordelijkheid nemen. Maar hoe doen we dat met zijn allen?
Wat me erg teleurstelt is dat mijn twee prangende vragen niet beantwoord worden, al wordt er zijdelings wel naar verwezen: Lijst Beukers tracht over verschillende belangen van de diverse partijen heen te kijken en gaat voor het groepsbelang.

Lijst 7: Voor Neerijnen

Ik moet heel eerlijk bekennen dat ik – toen ik de krant opsloeg en over Wouter las dat hij de politiek in ging – er erg over te spreken was. Wat ik niet besefte was dat ze een website bouwer had met een beeldscherm van 20.000 pixels ofzo. Past hun website op uw scherm? Maar goed, websites bouwen is een kunst – die hoef je als politicus niet te verstaan, dus ik reken ze er niet te hard op af.
Wat me aanstaat aan deze partij is de poging tot cultuuromslag – dus ik hoop dat Wouter mee mag doen en mag laten zien hoe dat in zijn werk gaat. Maar waar ik het absoluut oneens mee ben is de drang naar fusie.
Al sinds Thatcher zijn we bezig met privatiseren en schaalvergroten onderaan de ladder. En steeds weer blijkt dat het geïdealiseerde efficiëntere en goedkopere werken uit blijft. Er zijn geen banen bijgekomen door deze schaalvergroting. De treinen is enorm over te klagen, je kunt er niet meer op rekenen dat de post morgen in Delfzijl is, je moet als bedrijf drie weken wachten tot KPN de kabel voor je deur gerepareerd heeft (en dus kun je drie weken niet bellen, ergo drie weken geen zaken doen)… En nu, na al deze gigantische fiasco’s moet de regering mee gaan doen? Een grotere gemeente heeft minder tijd voor iedere burger, staat dus verder van de burger af en dat zorgt dus voor oneerlijker beleid. Eerlijk beleid is beleid dat iedereen voorziet in wat hij nodig heeft; dus niet per se gelijke monikken, gelijke kappen. Een grote gemeente kan niet makkelijk individueel beslissen over kleine geschillen in die irritant kleine dorpskerntjes 30 kilometer van het gemeentehuis. Daarom ben ik tegen fuseren. Samenwerken, zeker. Laat Geldermalsen ons afval maar ophalen, en ons groen voorzien. Oh, dat doet de AVRI; nou ja, zelfde buitenlandse gemeente. Laat Tiel maar voorzien in festivals en kermis. Maar hou de gemeente Neerijnen op zichzelf voor de eigen burgers. Zo zorg je voor stabiliteit en een gevoel van veiligheid.

Lijst 8: Artikel50

Ook deze partij is goed te vinden met behulp van Google, zelfs de locale pagina. Genante details: 1) Standpunten staat er twee keer op, terwijl er onder één niks staat. 2) De pdf van het verkiezingsprogramma heet Neerijnen Verkiezingsprogramma final.pdf (geen partijnaam, en vanwaar de Engelse term als je zo anti-Europa bent?), maar op bladzijde 2 staat: Concept-verkiezingsprogramma Artikel50 Neerijnen. Wat is het nou. Concept or not?
Maar goed, je kunt niet alle details goed hebben in de gemeente politiek. Soms maak je een klein detailfoutje; zelfs in de landelijke politiek gebeurt dat – tot wel 50 miljard. Deze partij droomt over een seculiere utopie – de definitie van seculier is dat religie geen invloed mag uitoefenen op de maatschappij. Ik ben een groot voorstander van de scheiding van kerk en staat (een moslim heeft precies die rechten als een boeddhist of christen als deze bij de regering aanklopt), maar zolang mensen geloven, blijft dat een stempel drukken op de maatschappij als geheel.
Verder heeft deze partij weinig geleerd van de geschiedenis. In 1700nogiets waren er veel mensen fel gekant tegen de eenwording van Nederland. Je was eerst Gelderlander, en daarna pas Nederlander. Nu is daar geen sprake meer van, en met de juiste voorwaarde en beperkingen heeft deze extra laag in de regering de Nederlandse bevolking als geheel goed gedaan. Zo zal ook een Europese regering op termijn en opgesteld met vallen en opstaan, met fouten en rechtzettingen, en belangrijker nog met de juiste beperkingen, een extra laag zijn die de bevolking van Europa op de lange termijn goed zal doen. We moeten het proces niet overhaasten, we moeten ook goed nadenken hoe we het aanpakken, maar een extra laag in de regering zie ik als iets positiefs – voor de generatie van mijn kinderen. Doorzetten dus, niet afschaffen.
De belangrijkste voorwaarde is dat deze nieuwste bovenste laag van regering zich bezig houd met de internationale betrekkingen, en niet met de laagste laag van de regering, die kleine gemeente. Die laatste moet echte directe invloed hebben op het leven van de lokale mensen. Die eerste moet randvoorwaarden scheppen om van ons uiteindelijk eerst Europeaan te maken, en dan pas Nederlander.
Dus nee, dit is zeker geen partij voor mij.

Maar ik ben niet wild enthousiast over de andere partijen. Ik ben dus wat je noemt een zwevende kiezer… Ik hoor graag in het commentaar hieronder wat jullie er van denken. Waarom moet ik waar op stemmen. En ik hoor het liefste nog van de verschillende fractievoorzitters een antwoord op mijn twee vragen. Wie van de veteranenpartijen (er zijn ook partijen die er niet bij waren dus hoeven niet te antwoorden) die het durft hier antwoord te geven heeft in ieder geval mijn respect – en krijgt wellicht mijn stem.
